Romans 8:26-27 – Who Else is Praying?

There have been times in the past where I knew somebody must have been praying for me. During a car accident in college, I later found out that my dad and uncle were both praying for our safety. My grandmother was one who also prayed for me regularly. I have always appreciated hearing that people have been praying for me. But did you know that there is someone praying for you all the time? The Bible talks about someone who intercedes for us even when we don’t know what to pray. Who else is praying?

  1. What does it say? (Rom. 8:26-27)

To get the gist of what these two verses say, it would be good to consider the greater context:

Christians who do not live according to the flesh are free from condemnation. They are free from sin and death and should live according to the Spirit instead of the flesh because of all the Jesus did for them. The Spirit verifies our salvation and helps us through the current times of suffering and will eventually glorify us. With that in mind, it is good to know that our current suffering is temporary and nothing compared to the glory which will be revealed. Creation looks forward to the future changes. We also look forward to the changes in us.

In the same way, the Spirit also comes to our aid regarding our lack of strength. For we have not known exactly what to pray as we should, however the Spirit is interceding for us with unheard sighs. But the One who is searching the hearts has known what the Spirit has in mind because He is interceding for the saints according to what God wants.

  2. What does it mean?

The Spirit intercedes for us (Rom. 8:26).

In the verses just before this, Paul stated that both Creation and Christians are sighing about their current situation. Both are troubled by the current results of a sin-cursed world. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit comes to our aid regarding our lack of strength. This lack of strength “may include physical, emotional, and spiritual disability.”1 While there are reasons to find joy in our daily lives, there is still a constant struggle against sin, difficulties, and disappointments. Our personal experience is that we haven’t known what to pray. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf. His prayers for us are filled with the same kind of sighs, though not heard, which characterize our struggle with the current situation.

What this means is that we are not alone when we are praying. The Holy Spirit is also praying at the same time. Although His prayers for us are not heard, they are still being sent to God the Father for us. This is called the Spirit’s work of intercession. Intercession is someone speaking on behalf of another. In this case, the Spirit, who lives within every Christian, continually appeals to God the Father that He would help us. When we don’t know what to say, the Spirit does and is speaking to God for us.

The Spirit is effective (Rom. 8:27).

In verse 27, Paul mentions He who searches the hearts. Who is this? It is none other than God the Father. Think of what the Lord said to Samuel when David was chosen as the next king. He said, “The Lord looks at the heart” (1 Sam. 16:7). Also, the psalmist said, “Search me and know my heart” (Psalm 139:23). In both cases, the Lord is the One who is searching the hearts of people. This One who knows our hearts also knows what the Spirit is thinking as He intercedes for us. Why is that? He knows because the Spirit appealing to the Father according to what God desires.

This shows us that the Spirit’s intercession for Christians is effective. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit are three-in-One. And they are always of the same mind as they interact within the Trinity. We may not understand the Trinity, but we understand that God is united in purpose and desire. When the Spirit prays with unuttered sighs about our current situation, He prays that God’s desire will be accomplished in our lives. Do you think that His prayers are effective? Despite the world’s influence, our own sinful nature, and our inability to know how best to pray, the Spirit knows exactly what would be best in each situation. As we pray, He prays, and the best appeal to God is made on our behalf.

  3. How does it apply?

When you feel weak, remember that the Holy Spirit is interceding for you.

There are times when we are happy with life and all is sunshine and pretty flowers. But there are other times when the reality of life in a sinful world hits hard. We live in a world that is heavily affected by the results of sin. The earth struggles with this and so do we. We long for the blessed hope of Jesus’ return and the subsequent changes He will make on earth and in us. But we also realize that it hasn’t happened yet. As we seek to share the gospel with people or to help other Christians, we feel weak and long for this struggle to be over.

During times like that, remember that you are not alone in your weakness. The Holy Spirit who indwells you is aware of those weaknesses and is interceding for you as you pray. Your prayers may not come out right. They might not even be the best thing to ask. But the Spirit knows that and still prays to the Father on your behalf. Be assured that He cares for you and will continue to pray to the Father for you long after you have finished praying.

When you feel ineffective, remember that the Holy Spirit is interceding for you.

Have you ever prayed with the feeling that you didn’t know exactly what you should say? You pray for God’s will to be done, but you are not sure how God’s will applies to that particular situation. It is hard to pray with confidence in those situations. Even if you use Scripture in your prayers, you might be wondering just what God would want as you pray. We know that “the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” (James 5:16), but how effective can you be as you struggle praying without knowing what needs to be done?

This is where the effectiveness of the Holy Spirit comes in. As God, the Holy Spirit knows exactly what is best in every situation. He knows God the Father’s will because He is One with Him. As a result, He may pray differently than you do. He may ask the Father to do things that you might not understand or want. But what the Spirit prays every time is what God wants to accomplish. So, as you pray, pray will fervency. But also pray with the mindset that the Holy Spirit is appealing to God the Father with the perfect solution that is in line with God’s perfect will.

Conclusion

If I were to ask you what your favorite verse was in this chapter, you would probably choose Romans 8:28. “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” This is a wonderful statement of God’s goodness toward those whom He has called. But it must be read in context. Why do all things work together for good for God’s children? They work together for good because the Holy Spirit is actively appealing to God to accomplish His will in our lives. As you face the struggles of life this week, be assured that you are not alone in your prayers. The Holy Spirit is on your side and is actively appealing to God the Father for what is best in your life.
